I was recently sent the below link from the publisher of OC Metro who shared his viewpoint on our expectation of instant communication.I think his insights are interesting, however, this is the age of technology and instant communication. As with anything, we need to do our best to strike a balance.

I agree that there shouldn’t be the expectation will that we respond instantaneously to digital pings. The old etiquette was to respond to any business communication within 24 hours, regardless of how the message was delivered. However, it is a new world, and the expectation is that we respond within a few hours.

It is widely assumed that a text message should receive an instant response. I disagree. Unless it’s an emergency, I do not respond to messages right away but allot time during the day to respond at one time (if at all possible). Otherwise, my day would be filled with responding to pings rather than getting any productive work done.

Our future customer, client, boss, and employee will most likely be a Generation Y‘er. These folks live and breathe on their mobile devices and will be communicating with us by text, he social media channels, maybe email. If we wish to cultivate this new breed of consumer, we will need to evolve or they will pass us by.
