As ChatGPT and other AI platforms start to steal some of Google’s search thunder, your SEO strategy will need to adapt accordingly.
The big question is, if people are asking AI to solve a problem they have, how do you get the AI models to recommend your business? Here are seven key techniques that will put you ahead of the curve.
1. Make sure your website is listed everywhere. Whether it’s review sites, online directories, Google Business Profile, or industry-specific forums, make sure that your business and website are listed there, and that all the information is accurate and consistently branded. If you’ve ever done local SEO, you likely already know a few places to check.
2. Make sure that you are everywhere. This means being active and engaged in spaces where your audience spends time, which will also be spaces where the content ends up in AI training data. This could include posting on forums, attending industry events, and participating in webinars. The more places you are, the more likely AI will recommend your business in relevant contexts.
3. Recite your mini-pitch everywhere. Whenever you are making a video, guesting on a podcast, or giving an interview, get in habit of introducing yourself by stating your name, the name of your business, and the one-sentence pitch of what your business does. When videos and podcasts are transcribed, those transcriptions end up in the AI training data, so take advantage.
4. Expand your reach. If you’re not already contributing across various sites and platforms by writing guest articles and collaborating with other experts in your industry, now’s a great time to start. The wider your brand’s digital footprint, the more likely it is to be picked up by AI as a relevant brand for your niche.
5. Publish press releases. AI-friendly press releases contain language that let crawler bots know who you are and what business you’re in, making your business name more likely to show up in AI training data as a major player in your industry.
6. Double-check your robots.txt file. If you are deliberately blocking AI bots from crawling your website, you might want to rethink that tactic. Concerns about AI having access to your content will be irrelevant if your business never gets mentioned by AI, and then your competitors take over as a result. If you want AI to recommend your business, you need to let the bots in.
7. Strengthen your on-page SEO. When the AI bots crawl your site, make sure they find very clear and strong indicators of what industry your business is in, what customers you serve, and how you help them. Use clear and simple language, and make good use of H1 and H2 headings.
