WHERE BUSINESSES GO TO GROW

What Facebook’s Redesigned News Feed Means for You

BY Peg McDermott on Mar 26, 2013 / IN Facebook

You probably don’t have it just yet, but they’re rolling it out in waves very soon – earlier this month, Facebook announced a huge redesign to the news feed, modifying just about everything with regard to how users view content. Branding it as “the best personalized newspaper in the world,” Facebook is changing the way we aggregate content… again.

Naturally, as with all Facebook updates, this means you’ll have to rethink how you’re using your business page, and optimize things to look as good as possible with the new feed. The most obvious change is that images are more important than ever, from your cover image right down to snapshots you upload from your phone. Default images sizes are larger, and fully responsive so that the feed looks the same whether you’re viewing it from a computer, a tablet, or a phone. In other words, if you were waiting for the right time to update your photos and get some higher-quality images uploaded, now would be perfect.

The good news about the responsive design is the consistency. Because the new feed looks the same on all devices, you no longer have to worry about whether to design for one device or another. You can simply concentrate on creating the highest quality content possible, and let Facebook do the rest.

There are also some changes to the way content can be filtered. In addition to the existing options to filter by most recent or by top news, users will now be able to see a filter that only includes photos, one that only includes their close friends, and one called “Following,” which is mostly for brands and company pages.

What remains to be seen, though, is how users will respond to the existence of these new filters. Will they continue to view all content as a default, or will they choose to filter company pages out and only view posts by their close friends? Obviously this could present an issue for brands trying to be seen by as many eyes as possible, and means that your posting frequency and the quality of your posts is going to start mattering a lot more. If you post too often or have too much filler content, people will likely choose to filter you out of their feed.

Have you thought about what your response will be to the news feed redesign? Are you worried about what the changes will mean for your brand, or are you excited to see how far you can go with the new design?
